01 / THE APPROACH
LIVING HISTORY
Since 1907, the Green Mill has celebrated the evolution of jazz, from its early roots in ragtime through swing and bebop to modern. The challenge was to find a layered design system that services the history of Green Mill and jazz itself.
02 / The Design Language
HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
The identity draws from the Green Mill's layered visual history, from its ornate architectural details and theatrical stage framing to its iconic neon signage and jazz heritage. The decorative border references classical and Rococo-inspired ornament, refined into a balanced, symmetrical composition. The expressive script takes its cues from twentieth-century illuminated signage, while understated, hand-drawn supporting lettering provides contrast and clarity. Rather than imposing a conventional Art Deco aesthetic, these influences are brought together in a cohesive visual system that preserves the venue's character while adapting naturally to contemporary applications.
